Membership

COBSEO is a Company Limited by Guarantee and is independent of any Government Department or pressure group. The Directors of the Company make up the membership of the Executive Committee. The organisation endeavours to work for its own membership's best interests.

Who is eligible?

Applications are welcomed from Service and ex-Service Organisations and Associations who work to represent, promote and further the interests, especially welfare, of Serving and ex-Service men and women and their dependants by all practical and proper means. Other types of organisation may be considered for membership at the discretion of the Executive, which is responsible for deciding whether or not an application is accepted.

What COBSEO can provide

COBSEO, through the work of the Executive Committee and with information from members, is able to develop policies for dealing with issues of common concern, especially welfare matters. It is able to ask individual member Charities, with the appropriate expertise, to lead on the membership’s behalf to present policies to Government or other appropriate bodies. The Chairman of COBSEO and the Executive Committee sit on the Veteran’s Minister’s Forum, which brings together representatives from the various Government Departments who discuss Veterans community matters of concern.

COBSEO holds its Annual General Meeting in the autumn, where the Annual Report is presented, a keynote speaker is invited and there is opportunity for questions to be asked on topical subjects. Membership of COBSEO also automatically ensures that MOD send an invitation for a representative of your organisation to attend a Veteran’s UK Annual conference held in the Spring, where matters dealt with by the Forum are amongst the Agenda items.

During the year there are a number of COBSEO Bulletins on subjects of general or specific interest in which membership information may be disseminated. Members are of course able to contact the Secretary by phone, letter or e-mail with any matter of concern.

Membership fee

COBSEO functions through the enthusiasm and support of its members and the leadership of its Chairman and Executive Committee. Its administrative overheads are kept to a minimum but it does need sufficient financial backing to carry out its work. The present membership fee is set at £50 per annum in order to be all inclusive, but members are asked, according to their means, to consider contributing more than the fee, so that the proper overall support is available and that the less fortunate groups are looked after by those who are financially stronger.
