The Royal Alfred Seafarers’ Society is raising awareness of the important role played by the nation’s fishermen through National Fish and Chip Week.

The Society, which provides dedicated nursing care home and accommodation for retired seafarers, is supporting the Seafarers UK initiative with a Facebook campaign to determine the British public’s favourite place to enjoy a fish and chip supper, whether that be on the coast by Scarborough or by the lake in their local park.

Fans are invited to post pictures of themselves eating the nation’s favourite dish and share their stories of memorable fish and chip dinners. To take part in the campaign visit the Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/RoyalAlfredSeafarers

Commander Brian Boxall-Hunt OBE, Chief Executive of the Royal Alfred Seafarers’ Society, said: “This is a fantastic initiative to raise money for the welfare of fishermen and other seafarers in need and we are delighted to be able to support it. I hope our Facebook campaign will evoke happy memories and encourage the public to eat more fish and chips to support the industry. We also hope to raise awareness of the often very difficult conditions our fishermen endure to provide the nation with its favourite dish and give them the recognition they deserve.”

The Seafarers UK Fish & Chip Feast runs from October 8–14, and aims to help fishermen and other seafarers in need by raising money by eating the nation’s favourite dish.

This year the individual chip shop that raises the most funds during the week of the Fish & Chip Feast will win the Seafarers UK ‘Fish & Chip Feast – Top Fundraising Shop of the Year Award’.
