Meet Cobseo’s Members – introducing Royal Navy Officers’ Charity

Tell us about your organisation…

The Royal Navy Officers’ Charity (RNOC) has been supporting Royal Navy, Royal Marines and Queen Alexandra’s Royal Naval Nursing Service officers and their families since 1739. Our mission is to provide discreet, rapid and effective financial assistance to serving and retired officers, their spouses, widows, widowers and dependants when they are facing financial hardship or difficult circumstances.

Our aim is simple: to reduce hardship, whilst protecting dignity and ensuring that those who serve and have served in the Royal Navy, and their families, have somewhere to turn when they need help.

How does your organisation support the Armed Forces Community?

The Royal Navy Officers’ Charity provides financial support to members of the Royal Navy Officer family who find themselves in need. We support both serving and retired officers, as well as their families and dependants, and our assistance covers a wide range of circumstances.

We can provide grants towards essential living costs, housing, education, disability and mobility needs, debt and other unexpected financial pressures. We can also provide longer-term financial support where appropriate.

We work closely with other Armed Forces charities and organisations so that beneficiaries receive the right support as quickly as possible. Where RNOC is not best placed to help directly, we can signpost people to trusted organisations within the wider support network.

What makes you proud of the work in the sector?

We are proud to be there for people who have spent their lives serving and supporting others, and to be able to offer that same sense of service when they themselves need help.

What makes us particularly proud is the difference that timely, compassionate and discreet support can make. A relatively modest grant can remove an immediate financial worry, help a family through a difficult period or give someone the confidence and stability to move forward.

We are also proud of the way RNOC works alongside other organisations in the Armed Forces charity sector. By sharing knowledge and working collaboratively, we can help ensure that people receive the right support at the right time.

How does being a Member of Cobseo help you to do your work?

As a very small team of five, being part of Cobseo is extremely valuable to us. It gives us access to a much wider Armed Forces charity network, allowing us to share knowledge, learn from others and develop stronger relationships with organisations that support the same community.

For RNOC, collaboration is particularly important. No single charity can meet every need, and being part of Cobseo helps us understand what support is available elsewhere and make effective referrals or work jointly where appropriate.

It also gives a small organisation like ours a stronger voice within the wider Armed Forces charity sector. The opportunity to contribute to discussions, share best practice and stay informed about emerging issues helps us to ensure that our support remains relevant, effective and focused on the needs of our beneficiaries.
