2023 Photo Competition winners announced

Each year, ABF The Soldiers’ Charity runs a photo competition which is open to both professional photographers and the general public. This year we received over 90 entries, and the top 12 will feature in our 2024 calendar, which is now available here for pre-order for delivery from September.

First Place:  “Camming-up” by Tom Lawrence

The winning images presented various scenes from Army life across several themes – training, operational and ceremonial – and in a wide variety of locations.

Joint Second Place: “Challenger 2 Warrior tanks firing (Latvia)” by Joe Turner

Our judges this year were ITV’s Lorraine Kelly, Rav Wilding (TV presenter), Gareth Neame (TV producer) and Natalya Platonova (British Army soldier, mental health awareness campaigner and former winner of Channel 4’s The Circle). We thank them all for taking the time to review our shortlist and pick the winners.

Joint Second Place: “The future of the Army” Donald Todd

The winning entry was submitted by Tom Lawrence from Bishop’s Stortford for ‘Camming Up’, which shows a team of British Army cadets camouflaging during training at Stanford Training Area in Norfolk.

In praising Tom’s winning image, Natalya said:

“I love the simplicity of this one showing the everyday battle rhythm of getting ready on exercise. A beautiful photo.”

Joint second place went to Joe Turner from Ludlow, Shropshire for his image of Challenger 2 and Warrior tanks at a demonstration in Latvia, and Donald Todd from North Shields, N Tyneside for his image of British Army soldiers at a joint modern warfare exercise in the USA.
