Barbara, 101 years old, is one of our FANY SOE veterans. Barbara served in England as a wireless telegrapher receiving messages from SOE agents deployed in the field and was later posted to Germany to work for the General in charge of British Control in Berlin. She is now resident in the USA and flew over to the UK with her daughter for VE80 commemorations.
Throughout the week of commemorations, Barbara inspected the FANY squad before they took part in the VE 80 Day National Parade and watched the parade; attended a celebratory tea party at the US Embassy; was a guest at the reception marking the installation of ceramic poppies at the Tower of London; and she attended the VE 80 Westminster Abbey National Service of Commemoration and Thanksgiving alongside Joyce Wilding, a fellow FANY SOE veteran.
Barbara has shared pages from her wartime diary that she was very keen to be seen by the widest possible audience, which is especially poignant as she commented “I hope that the truth about us will someday be revealed” – thank you so much for your service Barbara!
