Veterans, families, and local anglers gathered for the Veterans’ Fishing Match & Blesma Dave Lewan Memorial Trophy, a heartwarming event held at Scunthorpe Amalgamated Anglers’ (SAA) ponds and organised by Blesma Member David Eynon.
The match was more than just a competition – it was a celebration of inclusion and community. Thanks to David and the SAA committee, the venue now features wheelchair-accessible pegs, re-laid paths, and fully accessible facilities, making it easier than ever for veterans and community members with mobility challenges to enjoy the sport.
Attendees praised the calming effects of fishing, the joy of shared experiences, and the welcoming atmosphere created by the angling community. The event also raised over £2,000 for Blesma through generous donations and an auction of fishing gear and supplies, kindly contributed by local businesses.
David, a passionate advocate for angling’s mental and physical health benefits, hopes to see more veterans take up the sport. Equipment and tuition are available for newcomers ready to give it a try.
