SSAFA Northern Ireland volunteer, Tommie Linton MBE, was named a finalist for both the Channing Day Inspirational Veteran of the Year and Volunteer of the Year awards, while SSAFA Northern Ireland was shortlisted for Charity of the Year. Alongside these nominations, SSAFA caseworker Yvonne Mulholland was recognised in the Judges’ Recognition Award for many years of volunteering in a variety of roles.
A veteran himself, Tommie has devoted his post-service life to helping others in the Armed Forces family. Since joining SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity in 2019 as a volunteer caseworker, he has become a driving force behind the charity’s Veterans in the Criminal Justice System programme in Northern Ireland.
Tommie’s dedication was recognised in 2022 with SSAFA’s Sir James Gildea Global Award, honouring his outstanding contribution to veteran welfare. His work continues to bridge military and civilian support networks, offering vital support, compassion and hope to veterans navigating the justice system and beyond.
Tommie said:
“It’s incredibly humbling to be nominated alongside so many inspiring people, I don’t do this work for recognition, but because every veteran deserves to be seen, heard, and supported – especially those who feel forgotten.”
Robert Dunne MBE, Regional Chair SSAFA Ireland said:
“These nominations reflect the dedication, compassion and hard work of Tommie and every member of the SSAFA Northern Ireland team who give so much in support of our Armed Forces family. It was a professional and uplifting evening, a fitting tribute to those who continue to make a difference long after their time in uniform.”
The Northern Ireland Veterans Awards celebrate the achievements of veterans who continue to serve their communities long after leaving the military, a fantastic celebration of service, commitment and camaraderie.
