SSAFA recognised at Downing Street for support to North forces community

SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity was represented at a recent Downing Street event recognising the contribution of organisations supporting communities, including those working with serving personnel, veterans and their families.

The event brought together representatives from the voluntary and community sector to acknowledge the role local organisations play in addressing need, building resilience and supporting those who serve and have served in the Armed Forces.

SSAFA was represented by Derek Cross, Regional Chair for the Northeast and Branch Chair for West Yorkshire, following earlier engagement in Bramley, Leeds, where he met with Chancellor and MP for Leeds West and Pudsey, Rachel Reeves, during a visit focused on listening to organisations supporting serving personnel and veterans at a local level.

The Downing Street reception provided an opportunity to further highlight the impact of SSAFA’s work across the region, as well as to connect with other organisations working across health, wellbeing, employment and social support.

Derek said:

“It was encouraging to see the contribution of civil society recognised and to have the opportunity to represent SSAFA and the volunteers who support the military community and their families across West Yorkshire and the North East.”

SSAFA deeply values the role its volunteers and regional leaders play in ensuring the voices of the Armed Forces community are heard locally and nationally and welcomes opportunities to strengthen understanding of the challenges veterans and their families can face.

SSAFA volunteers have been helping the Armed Forces community – regulars and reserves, serving or retired, and their families since 1885. To volunteer or fundraise for SSAFA, or to seek support, search for “SSAFA near me”.
