Ranked as one of the top 100 golf courses in England, with stunning views across Dartmoor and Cornwall, the Plymouth team of SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity, is inviting members of the public to get involved with their annual golf day at the Yelverton Golf Club.
Taking place on Friday 15 May, this year marks the sixth iteration of the Armed Forces charity golf day. Available to anyone over the age of 18, the day is open to 76 players, with slots filling up fast.
Entrants will enjoy the rich heritage of the course. Home to many top-quality competitions, the moorland course was designed in 1904 by Herbert Fowler. Utilising the landscape, the course incorporates some old mine workings, and leats (man-made watercourses or channels), as well as natural hazards to challenge and inspire golfers of all abilities.
After enjoying a serene and scenic round of golf, entrants will enjoy a meal at the club, as well as try their luck in the traditional post-event raffle. Offering four-ball vouchers from other golf clubs across Devon and Cornwall, as well as other sought-after prizes, the day is expected to be a relaxing and jovial affair.
Organiser of the event and caseworker for SSAFA in Plymouth, Colin Stockman said:
“The golf day is always a lot of fun, and over the five years we have been running it we have managed to raise more than £3,700 for SSAFA. Playing on such a beautiful course makes it an unmissable opportunity for people across Devon and Cornwall to get involved.
“Due to growing demand, this year we have upped our tee slots from 12 to 19 — a great indicator of the success of previous years.
“Open to all abilities the teams will be in mixed groups of four, playing off 18-hole handicaps, with only two scores counting towards the final numbers. Those with inactive handicaps are also welcome to join and take part in the day.
“SSAFA exists to make sure serving personnel, veterans, and their families never battle alone, and it’s thanks to supporters who attend events such as this one that we can continue to do so. As a caseworker, I see first-hand the need that is in Plymouth, and all donations go towards our mission ensuring we can continue to provide that life-changing support.”
Entries close on 1 May 2026. Fees cost £55 per player, £30 for those who have an existing membership at the Yelverton Golf Club. This includes a warm beverage, and a bacon roll on arrival, 18 holes of golf and a one-course meal at the clubhouse.
