Royal Naval Association mourns the loss of its oldest member, Harry Waddingham, aged 109

The Royal Naval Association (RNA) is deeply saddened to announce the passing of its oldest member, Harry Waddingham, at the remarkable age of 109.  He was the oldest known veteran of the Second World War and died last week.

Harry Waddingham was a proud WWII Naval veteran whose life embodied service, resilience, and dedication to his country. Harry joined the Royal Navy at the age of 16, even before WWII. He served with distinction during the Second World War,  supporting the evacuation of Dunkirk. He was on board the destroyer Juno when it sunk off the coast of Crete and survived to continue convoy escort duties.

His wartime service included duty in the Atlantic, where he played a vital role in convoy operations, helping to safeguard critical supply routes against enemy threat during one of the most perilous periods of the conflict.

Throughout his naval career, Harry was known for his steadfast commitment, quiet courage, and unwavering sense of duty. Like so many of his generation, he faced immense challenges at sea, yet rarely spoke of his own sacrifices, instead maintaining a humble pride in having served alongside his fellow shipmates.

Harry was a Life Member of the Royal Naval Association, maintaining close ties with the naval community, continuing to attend events well into his later years. He was an inspiration to generations of members, representing a living link to the history and heritage of the Royal Navy.

RNA National President, VAdm Duncan Potts said:

“Harry Waddingham was truly one of a kind. To reach 109 years is extraordinary in itself, but to have lived a life of service and integrity makes his passing all the more poignant. We are immensely proud to have called him one of our own, and he will be greatly missed.”

Harry’s passing marks the end of an era. His life stands as a testament to the courage and sacrifice of the wartime generation, whose legacy continues to inspire us all.

The Royal Naval Association extends its deepest condolences to Harry’s family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
