Hours: 25 hours per week on average, with flexibility across weekdays and weekends to meet the operational needs of the Hub Café

Purpose of the Role
To support the Café Manager in the day-to-day running of the Hub Café, ensuring a welcoming, safe and well-managed environment for all visitors, beneficiaries, and the wider community.
The role is central to the sustainability of the Café, providing operational and supervisory support across the week. This includes leading shifts, supporting volunteers, maintaining H&S standards, and assisting with administrative and financial processes to ensure the Café operates effectively and continues to support the Charity’s wider mission.
Key Responsibilities
Café Operations
- Support the smooth day-to-day running of the Café, including opening and closing duties.
- Maintain high standards of food quality, hygiene, and presentation.
- Ensure the Café environment is clean, organised, and welcoming at all times.
- Assist with stock control, ordering, and supplier coordination.
Staff & Volunteer Support
- Supervise volunteers and provide guidance during shifts.
- Support the coordination of volunteer rotas and day-to-day activities.
- Foster a positive, inclusive and supportive team environment.
- Assist in training and onboarding volunteers where required.
Customer Experience
- Deliver excellent customer service and ensure all visitors feel welcome.
- Handle customer enquiries, feedback, and complaints professionally.
- Build positive relationships with regular customers, beneficiaries, and community members.
- Support the Café’s role as a community hub aligned to the Charity’s values.
Financial & Administrative Support
- Support daily cash handling and reconciliation processes.
- Assist with record keeping, stock tracking, and basic reporting.
- Follow financial procedures and support cost awareness within the Café.
Health, Safety & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with food hygiene, health and safety regulations.
- Support risk assessments and safe working practices.
- Maintain a safe environment for staff, volunteers, and visitors.
- Ensure all procedures are followed consistently.
Community Engagement
- Support the delivery of events and activities within the Café.
- Promote a welcoming and inclusive environment for the Armed Forces community.
- Assist with basic promotion and engagement activities where required.
Person Specification
This role is hands-on, people-focused, and central to the daily success of the Hub Café. You will be a reliable and proactive team member who enjoys working in a community environment and supporting others.
Essential
- Experience in a Café, hospitality, or customer-facing role
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Understanding of food hygiene and health & safety practices
- Ability to manage workload and prioritise tasks
Desirable
- Experience supervising staff or volunteers
- Experience supporting day-to-day operations in a café or similar setting
- Basic financial or administrative experience
- Understanding of the Armed Forces community
- Experience supporting community-based services or initiatives
