Seven-year-old Olivia shows Tough Mudder spirit to support Naval families

Olivia Herbert has shown extraordinary determination, resilience and generosity by raising over £600 for Royal Navy & Royal Marines Charity (RNRMC) after taking on her very first Tough Mudder challenge.

When Olivia’s dad deployed on a record-breaking patrol, she experienced first-hand the challenges faced by many military children. Wanting to channel her energy into something positive during a difficult time, she set herself the goal of completing a Tough Mudder while raising money for the charities and organisations that help naval families.

What began as a modest fundraising target quickly exceeded all expectations. Olivia originally hoped to raise £100, excitedly asking: “Can you imagine that, Mummy?”

Throughout the deployment, RNRMC-funded support played an important role in helping Olivia and her family navigate the months apart. Through organisations such as Royal Navy Family and People Support (RN FPS), the family received practical and emotional support, including a Huggable Hero ‘Daddy Doll’ that brought comfort while her father was away.

Reflecting on the impact of the support, Olivia’s mother said:

“Last year, while her dad was deployed, Olivia needed something positive to focus on. She set her sights on a Tough Mudder and chose to raise money for the organisations that supported us through one of the hardest periods our family has faced.

“For families with no contact for months on end, local support funded by RNRMC becomes a lifeline. From HomeStart giving me precious one-to-one time with Olivia away from her toddler brothers, to RN FPS staff who were always ready with a listening ear and hard-won solo-parenting insight, to funded days out that helped us get through long weekends – RNRMC’s funding made parenting on a wobbling house of cards feel doable again, sometimes even joyful.”

Determined to complete her challenge, Olivia trained for a 1.5km children’s Tough Mudder event. However, on the day, an administrative error meant she ended up tackling double the distance she had prepared for. Rather than giving up, Olivia completed the full 3km muddy obstacle course alongside children much older than herself. At one stage she was close to tears with exhaustion and was given the option to stop, but she chose to keep going and crossed the finish line with a huge smile.

Her mum said:

“I couldn’t be prouder of her resilience and determination. At one point she was on the brink of tears and I told her she could stop – but she chose to carry on, showing the kind of grit so many military children know by heart.”

The family would like to thank everyone who has supported Olivia’s fundraising effort. They are deeply grateful to RNRMC and the local organisations that RNRMC fund for standing with families like theirs and are incredibly proud of Olivia for turning a tough year into something hopeful and generous.

Olivia is especially grateful to the many anonymous donors who contributed to her appeal and is already hard at work creating thank you cards for everyone who supported her challenge. Having experienced the impact of military family support first-hand, she understands just how important this funding is for Armed Forces families.

From all of us at RNRMC, thank you, Olivia. Your determination, kindness and courage are an inspiration.
