The Royal Naval Association is delighted to announce the appointment of Andrew (Andy) Coles as its new General Secretary and Chief Executive.
Andy will join the Association on 7 September 2026 after the interview panel unanimously selected him for the role.
A former Royal Navy Commander, Andy served for 38 years after joining as a Junior Seaman in 1979. During a distinguished naval career, he commanded HMS Turbulent and HMS Astute, held senior leadership appointments including Base Commander of HMS Drake and Commander of 2nd Submarine Squadron, and was appointed an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE).
Since leaving the Royal Navy in 2017, Andy has built extensive commercial leadership experience across the maritime sector, working with Svitzer, Survitec, MDL Marinas and Western Marinas.
Importantly, Andy already knows the Association well as a member of the Cardiff Branch and understands the vital role the RNA plays in supporting serving personnel, veterans and their families.
Ahead of joining, Andy will complete charity governance and finance training before officially taking up post in September.
Speaking about his appointment, Andy said:
“It is a real honour to take on the role of CEO of the Royal Naval Association. As someone who served in the Royal Navy for 38 years, I have a real understanding of the lived experiences of our serving members and veterans of all ages, as well as their families.
“As a member of the Cardiff Branch, I have gained a good understanding of both the challenges and opportunities ahead. I look forward to working with our shipmates, volunteers, staff and supporters to build on the RNA’s legacy and ensure it continues to adapt and thrive for future generations.”
Everyone at the Royal Naval Association looks forward to welcoming Andy in September as the charity enters its next chapter.
