Herefordshire’s Veteran Support Centre (HVSC) is an established charity dedicated to providing a welcoming, accessible “one-stop support hub” for veterans, serving personnel, reservists, and their families across Herefordshire. We offer practical advice, professional guidance, and a compassionate listening ear to those facing challenges in their personal or professional lives.
Working in partnership with military charities, statutory organisations, and local service providers, HVSC delivers a wide range of support, including housing advice, debt counselling, employment assistance, mental health clinics, and wellbeing services. The Centre also provides facilities for partner organisations to meet clients and deliver specialist workshops and support sessions. We are open Monday to Friday, 9.00am–5.00pm.

HVSC is currently undergoing significant change as we embark on our ambitious Going for Growth strategy and we are seeking committed and forward-thinking individuals to join our Board of Trustees to help us achieve our objectives. This is an exciting opportunity to play a strategic leadership role within a respected local charity that makes a tangible difference to the lives of the Armed Forces community.
We are particularly interested in hearing from individuals with professional experience in the following areas. However, we also welcome applications from people with other skills and backgrounds who share our passion for supporting the Armed Forces community and can bring enthusiasm, commitment, and fresh perspectives to the Board.

The Role of a Trustee
As a Trustee, you will work collaboratively with fellow Board members to provide strategic leadership, effective governance, and oversight of the charity.
Key responsibilities include:
Strategic Leadership
- Contribute to the development and regular review of HVSC’s strategic direction.
- Ensure the charity’s activities remain aligned with its vision, values, and charitable objectives.
- Support the long-term sustainability and future growth of the organisation.
Governance and Compliance
- Ensure the charity operates in accordance with charity law, financial regulations, and best practice.
- Monitor organisational performance and risk.
- Promote high standards of governance and accountability.
Financial Oversight
- Oversee the charity’s financial health and sustainability.
- Support fundraising initiatives and champion opportunities to secure future funding.
- Act as an ambassador for HVSC, helping to strengthen relationships with supporters, partners, and potential donors.
Trustee Contribution
Trustees are expected to:
- Attend and actively participate in Board meetings.
- Bring their professional expertise, experience, and networks to support the charity.
- Maintain constructive relationships with fellow trustees, staff, volunteers, and partner organisations.
- Participate in trustee development and training where appropriate.
Time Commitment
Board meetings are held quarterly, typically during the early morning before the working day begins, and are currently conducted online via Microsoft Teams or Zoom. Trustees are also expected to attend the Annual General Meeting and, where appropriate, represent HVSC at occasional events or external engagements.
Remuneration
Trustee positions are voluntary and unpaid. Reasonable expenses incurred whilst carrying out trustee duties will be reimbursed in accordance with the charity’s expenses policy.
