A Programme Designed Around Female Veterans: Recovery and Wellbeing at Tedworth

Building on experience from previous recovery programmes, the Armed Forces Equine Charity (AFEC) delivered a female-only Veterans Active Recovery Programme at Tedworth Equestrian Centre from 5–9 October 2026, with support from GUL Outdoor Therapy.

The programme combined equine-assisted activities with art, yoga, wellbeing workshops and peer support, offering female veterans dedicated time to focus on their recovery and personal development.

Building on Previous Experience

The decision to offer this programme followed AFEC’s experience of delivering courses for female veterans affected by Military Sexual Trauma (MST). Drawing on learning from those courses, AFEC extended the opportunity to the wider female Armed Forces community.

The programme incorporated a dedicated female course lead, alongside peer-support volunteers from SHEROs MM2, a support network for those affected by Military Sexual Trauma, Military Sexual Assault and related experiences during military service.

The Role of Horses

Equine-assisted activities remained central to the programme, with riding and yard-based sessions encouraging participants to challenge themselves, overcome fears and achieve personal goals.

Feedback highlighted the value of interacting with horses, particularly in helping participants develop trust, build confidence and become more aware of their emotions.

Art, yoga and group discussions complemented the equine sessions. Participants particularly valued the opportunity to explore creative activities, practise relaxation techniques and spend time with others who shared similar experiences.

In Their Own Words

For one participant, the experience challenged her expectations of what a recovery programme could offer.

A Royal Navy veteran reflected:

“I came on this course thinking that it was for other people – I didn’t need it, however emotionally and physically I benefitted from this course immeasurably…”

She went on to describe her intention to make more time for herself and her hobbies, and to encourage others to attend.

An Army veteran shared:

“The impact of this course cannot be underrated & the impact is genuinely life changing”

A Royal Air Force veteran reflected:

“I feel like I’ve done something awesome”

Across the feedback, participants praised the horses, the activities and the compassionate approach of the delivery team. Many also expressed an interest in attending future courses or progression programmes.

We are grateful to Greenwich Hospital, Army Benevolent Fund, Veterans’ Foundation and Alabaré for their valued support in helping make programmes like this possible.
