Get fit and lean in 2017 for disabled veterans

Worthing-based charity, The Queen Alexandra Hospital Home (QAHH), is calling on local people to join their Worthing 10k running team, and help raise vital funds for disabled ex-Servicemen and women.

The Worthing 10k is one of the largest and friendliest running events in the south east, welcoming runners of all abilities to the flat seafront course on Sunday 4 June.

QAHH has a number of charity places for this year’s race, and has already begun recruiting members for ‘Team QAHH’, who will be running to raise money for the disabled veterans who live at the Hospital Home.

Samantha Stokes, Community & Events Fundraising Officer for QAHH, said: “Running for The Queen Alexandra Hospital Home is a rewarding experience and the QAHH team will support you all the way.

“The Worthing 10k is a great event for those who want to start running but need something to aim for. Running for a cause such as QAHH will really help motivate you throughout your training and on the day itself.

“We only have a limited number of places though, which are available on a first-come, first-served basis; and now is the ideal time to start training, so make sure you contact us ASAP to secure your place.”

Since 1919, QAHH has provided the highest possible standard of care and rehabilitation to disabled ex-Servicemen and women. Residents’ needs are complex and many have multiple disabilities; some have neurological disorders’ such as Parkinson’s or Acquired Brain Injury, while others are paralysed or do not have use of their limbs. The Hospital Home provides services such as nursing, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and speech and language therapy in order to help rehabilitate those that live there, with the hope that they can live more independent lives.
QAHH receives no government funding and this year must raise £1.3 million to deliver the high-quality facilities that our country’s veterans need and deserve.

Registration via QAHH is just £20, and the charity asks that you try to raise £100 in sponsorship.

Samantha added: “We will help all our runners by providing fundraising hints and tips, training advice as well as assistance in setting up online fundraising pages if needed. Our runners will also receive a free QAHH running vest, plus our dedicated cheerers will be around the course to spur you on and cheer you across the finishing line.”

If you’d like to run the 2017 Worthing 10k for The Queen Alexandra Hospital Home, or take part in any other running events throughout the country, please contact Samantha Stokes in the QAHH Fundraising office on 01903 218444 or email samantha-stokes@qahh.org.uk
