Greenwich Hospital has awarded a three-year grant of £177,729 to the Armed Forces Equine Charity to expand its Active Recovery programme and strengthen support for serving and former Royal Navy personnel and their families.
The funding will enable the Charity to further develop and extend the reach of its Active Recovery course modules for veterans, while providing dedicated support for serving Royal Navy personnel undertaking recovery duty.
The Armed Forces Equine Charity delivers inclusive and transformative support to members of the armed forces community facing a range of challenges, including mental health difficulties, loneliness, addiction, and physical injury.
Through structured interactions between humans and horses, the Charity helps individuals build confidence, improve wellbeing, and support their recovery and rehabilitation.
In addition to its equine-based programmes, the Charity delivers a wider welfare and wellbeing offer through its community hub, café, and heritage trail located alongside the Tidworth equestrian centres. These services support the wider armed forces community, including children and young people, families, older veterans, and those living with long-term health conditions or disabilities.
This grant reflects Greenwich Hospital’s ongoing commitment to supporting the wellbeing, recovery, and long-term resilience of serving and former Royal Navy personnel and their families.
Deirdre Mills, Director of Greenwich Hospital, said:
“Recovery is about much more than overcoming injury or illness; it is about rebuilding confidence, resilience, and a sense of purpose. The Armed Forces Equine Charity provides a unique and effective environment in which serving personnel and veterans can develop these qualities. We are delighted to support the expansion of the Active Recovery programme and help ensure more members of the Royal Navy community can benefit from this valuable support.”
Dame Sue Gray, Chief Executive Officer, the Armed Forces Equine Charity, said:
“This three-year grant enables us to expand the reach and impact of our Active Recovery programme and recognises the importance of a holistic recovery. It will help more serving and former Royal Navy personnel rebuild confidence, improve wellbeing, and develop a renewed sense of purpose. Through our equine-assisted programmes and wider community support network, we can provide meaningful opportunities for recovery and personal development to those facing physical or mental health challenges. We value Greenwich Hospital’s continued commitment to supporting the welfare and resilience of the Royal Navy community.”
