Greenwich Hospital Awards Grant of £18,000 to the Armed Forces Equine Charity

Greenwich Hospital Awards Grant of £18,000 to the Armed Forces Equine Charity to further support medically downgraded Royal Naval Personnel.

As part of Greenwich Hospital’s funding commitment to support the rehabilitation and recovery of medically downgraded Royal Navy and Royal Marines personnel, we are delighted to award a grant of £18,000 to the Armed Forces Equine Charity (AFEC).

The funding will enable the Charity to provide places for up to 12 serving personnel to attend its dedicated Residential Active Recovery course which supports physical and mental recovery and rehabilitation.

The AFEC’s comprehensive and tailored programmes are centred around equine interaction and designed to holistically improve mental and physical health, develop life skills, increase confidence, and focus on improving general wellbeing. They also work in partnership with other charities and organisations to help veterans referred to them through social prescribing – Op Nova and NHS Op Courage; The Veterans’ Mental Health and Wellbeing Service.

With five centres located around the UK, the Charity works to meet the needs of not only Armed Forces personnel but also their families and the remainder of the Armed Forces Community interested in horse riding, helping ensure equine sport and recreation is accessible to all.

Commenting on the funding award, AFEC CEO Jamie Balls MBE said:

“We recognise the journey many service personnel undertake as they work on their rehabilitation and recovery. Our work as a Charity helps them to improve their mental and physical health and we’re delighted to receive this funding award from Greenwich in support of this work.”

Director of Grants at Greenwich Hospital, Jonathan Ball OBE said:

“We seek to support all Royal Navy and Royal Marines personnel in their journey to recovery and a positive outcome whether focused within the military or outside of it. The work of the Armed Forces Equine Charity will help personnel in what can be an immensely challenging time for them and their families.”
