RNRMC funding helps deliver dedicated welfare space supporting serving personnel at Rosyth
HMS Caledonia, Rosyth – 28 April 2026
A new Welfare Hub has officially opened at HMS Caledonia, providing a dedicated space where Royal Navy personnel can take time out, relax and connect with others during the working day.
The project has been supported through funding from Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity (RNRMC). This support has helped create a space designed to improve everyday wellbeing and provide practical, accessible welfare facilities for serving personnel.
HMS Caledonia has seen increasing numbers of personnel based on site due to major ship maintenance and engineering work in the local area. At present, there are limited on-site facilities where people can get refreshments, socialise, or simply take a break away from their working environment. The new Welfare Hub has been created to address that gap.
The space offers a comfortable, informal setting where personnel can unwind. It includes a lounge area with sofas and a television, a games area, a quiet corner for relaxation, access to computers for personal use, and a tea and coffee station.
Funding from RNRMC has supported the practical furnishing of the space, including a a sofa, chairs, coffee unit, Games console and games, as well as external features including plants, benches, and solar panel lights. These elements help create a welcoming, homely environment rather than a formal or clinical space. This provides personnel with access to fresh air and a calm environment, supporting both mental wellbeing and general rest and recovery during the working day.
The Hub will also be used for informal activities and events delivered by military teams and charity partners from across Scotland and the UK. A permanent space has been set aside for naval charity Aggie’s, ensuring personnel can easily access support, advice, or simply someone to talk to if needed.
“We are incredibly proud to support the Welfare Hub at HMS Caledonia, which reflects our commitment to meeting the real, everyday needs of our beneficiaries. Spaces like this provide more than just facilities – they offer a sense of community, a place to recharge, and vital support for wellbeing during busy and demanding working days.” – Anne Carr, Head of Grants, Royal Navy & Royal Marines Charity
The need for the Welfare Hub has been clearly identified by those working at HMS Caledonia, where busy operational demands and limited communal facilities had left a gap in spaces for rest and connection. The new Hub helps address this by providing a simple but important resource: somewhere to pause, recharge and feel part of a community.
Today is a proud and important moment for HMS Caledonia. The opening of our new Welfare Hub reflects our commitment to the people who work here and to the families who support them. This dedicated space is somewhere to seek help when it’s needed, to connect with others, or simply to take a break and recharge. It reinforces that wellbeing sits at the heart of our community as we look to the future. – Capt Stuart Cantellow RN (CO HMS CALEDONIA)
This project reflects RNRMC’s focus on supporting real, identified needs within the Naval community. By investing in spaces shaped around the daily experience of personnel, the aim is to improve wellbeing, reduce isolation, and strengthen support networks where they are most needed.
