Llandudno War Memorial Walk for Blind Veterans UK

Staff and veterans from Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for vision-impaired ex-Service men and women, will be joined by a group of students for a War Memorial Walk in Llandudno as part of the charity’s ‘Planning to Remember’ campaign.

On 20 October, the group will meet at the charity’s Centre of Wellbeing in Llandudno and set off to complete a four-mile circular walk.

Students and staff from the Military Preparation College of Training in Wrexham will accompany the veterans along the route before taking the lead on a moment of reflection at the Llandudno War Memorial at 11am. Two students will read a poem in both English and Welsh giving them the opportunity to play a key role in this act of Remembrance.

Members of the public are invited to join the group at the Llandudno War Memorial.

The walk is part of Blind Veterans UK’s ‘Planning to Remember’ campaign which encourages individuals and groups to organise activities and between 20 October and 12 November to ensure the fallen and those left behind are not forgotten, while also fundraising to support blind veterans.

Victoria Beech from the charity’s Community Partnerships team said:

“This event really encapsulates our ‘Planning to Remember’ campaign – by bringing people in the community together with those who served in order to ensure future generations remember those who went before them for many years to come.”

Are you, a group, or someone you know planning to mark Remembrance in your community? Sign up to Blind Veterans UK’s ‘Planning to Remember’ campaign and find ideas for what you could do in your own community. Alternatively contact the Community Partnerships team on fundraising@blindveterans.org.uk

For many of the blind veterans taking part, this walk will mark the end of a week-long stay at the charity’s Llandudno Centre for a themed walking week.

This is just one of the themed stays offered at the centre which are designed to give blind veterans an opportunity to discover or reconnect with hobbies or interests they thought may be inaccessible to them after sight loss.

You can show your support to the group, and help Blind Veterans UK to continue to provide holidays to blind veterans at Llandudno, by visiting their Just Giving page to make a donation justgiving.com/page/walktoremember

Blind Veterans UK supports thousands of blind veterans across the country, but knows there are many thousands more who still need its support to rebuild their lives after sight loss.
