Meet Cobseo’s Members: introducing King Edward VII (Sister Agnes) Charity

Tell us about your organisation…

King Edward VII (Sister Agnes) Charity is a Royal Charter charity providing grants towards medical treatment for uninsured serving and former members of the UK Armed Forces and their families.

Founded in 1899 by Sister Agnes Keyser, the charity has supported the Armed Forces community for more than 127 years. Today, with His Majesty The King as Patron, we continue her commitment to helping people access the medical care they need.

How does your organisation support the Armed Forces Community?

We provide grants towards non-spinal musculoskeletal conditions and other specific medical treatment for eligible serving personnel, veterans and their families across UK and Northern Ireland at a Hospital of their choice.

The people who come to us for support have a wide range of medical needs. Some may have been living with pain or restricted mobility that is affecting their work, independence or everyday life. Others may need specialist treatment that they are unable to fund themselves.

Each application is considered individually, with grants contributing towards private medical care that can improve health, mobility, independence and quality of life.

We recognise, too, that asking for financial help with medical treatment is not always easy. We aim to make the process as straightforward and supportive as possible, treating every applicant with dignity and understanding.

What makes you proud of the work in the sector?

We are proud to continue Sister Agnes’s legacy more than 127 years after our founding. Every grant is an opportunity to make a meaningful difference to someone’s health and wellbeing.

We are also proud to be part of a collaborative Armed Forces charity sector, working together to ensure people can access the right support when they need it.

How does being a Member of Cobseo help you to do your work?

Cobseo membership helps us build relationships, share knowledge and raise awareness of the medical grants we provide.

By working more closely with organisations across the Armed Forces community, we hope to reach more eligible people, strengthen referral pathways and ensure those who could benefit from our support know we are here to help.
