At the heart of the Sapper community, past, present, and future, sits the Royal Engineers Association, The Sapper Charity. For over a century, we have provided the enduring link between generations of Royal Engineers, ensuring that wherever life takes them, on operations, in transition, or long after service, they remain part of a community for life. Our purpose is clear: to provide lifelong support and meaningful connection to serving personnel, veterans, and their families. It is how we deliver this that defines us. We combine practical support with strong community connection. At times, this means stepping in at moments of real need, providing financial assistance, welfare support, or simply reassurance that someone is there. At others, it means creating opportunity through sport, adventurous training and community activity that builds confidence, resilience, and purpose.
In 2025 alone, we delivered over £1.6 million in benevolence and welfare support, reaching hundreds of individuals and families across the Sapper community. Alongside this sits a thriving membership organisation and a global network of branches, keeping Sappers connected to each other and to the Corps. This sense of belonging, shared identity and mutual support, is as important as any individual grant or intervention.

The Sapper Charity supports the Armed Forces Community through a whole-life, Corps-wide approach, recognising that service, transition, and veteran life are all part of the same journey. At its core is benevolence and welfare support that is targeted, responsive, and often delivered at pace. We provide assistance where it is most needed, particularly when circumstances are urgent or fall outside other provision.
For veterans, this support is both immediate and long term. Whether helping individuals navigate financial difficulty, recover from illness or injury, or re-establish stability after leaving service, our focus is on enabling independence and restoring confidence. Many remain connected for life through our membership and branch network, ensuring that support is always within reach. Alongside direct welfare, we deliver targeted programmes such as the Children’s Fund and the Gabriel Fund, supporting families, enabling recovery, and helping veterans build sustainable futures.
Our support to the serving Corps is equally important. Through welfare provision, grants, and family support, we help reduce the pressures that sit behind operational life. Through sport, adventurous training, and expedition activity, we reinforce teamwork, resilience, and confidence, directly contributing to the moral component of fighting power. A defining feature of our approach is the integration of community and belonging. Through a network of over 100 branches, unit connections and Sapper communities, we create opportunities for engagement at every level, whether through local events, Corps sport, or shared heritage initiatives. These experiences build pride, strengthen identity, and maintain the bonds that define the Corps. From first posting to long after service has ended, our role is constant: to support, connect and sustain the Sapper family.
The Armed Forces charity sector is built on a shared commitment to serve those who have served. It is defined by professionalism, compassion and collaboration, and we are proud to play our part within it. Within that wider effort, we take particular pride in supporting both serving personnel and veterans as one connected community, ensuring that support is continuous rather than fragmented.
Serving soldiers can focus on operations knowing their families are supported. Veterans, years after leaving service, can still turn to a trusted network for help, connection, or a sense of belonging. Families, often carrying unseen pressures, receive support that helps them remain stable and resilient. The breadth of our delivery is equally important. Benevolence and welfare support sit alongside funding for sport and adventurous training, as well as community activity across branches and networks. Each element contributes to strengthening both the individual and the Corps as a whole. Above all, it is the people we support, and the quiet, often unseen impact of the work, that matters most. At the same time, the work brings a strong sense of humility. Behind every case sits a real story, often complex, sometimes difficult, always important.
That perspective reinforces an enduring truth: however much is achieved, there is always more to do. Demand continues to grow, needs evolve and expectations change. Our responsibility is to keep pace, ensuring that support remains relevant, accessible, and effective for today’s Sapper family and for those who will follow.
Being part of Cobseo places The Sapper Charity within a trusted and collaborative national network, ensuring our work is connected to the wider effort supporting the Armed Forces Community. It helps us remain aligned with best practice and emerging need, ensuring that our welfare, veteran provision, and community engagement continue to evolve in line with the realities faced by those we serve. It also strengthens collaboration. While our role is broad, we do not operate in isolation.
