New Course From BFBS Academy To Get Veterans Into Production Management

Applications are now open for the 2023 BFBS Academy Production Managers Course for veterans and service leavers.

This course is fully funded by military charity and media organisation BFBS, and offers an intensive six-month vocational training programme, developed in collaboration with the media, TV and film industries.

Run by media industry experts, it equips service leavers with all the skills and relevant experience they need to find rewarding new careers as production coordinators and production managers in these industries.

In addition to the course funding, there is also a £9,000 grant available for successful applicants to support with living costs.

The course covers:

·        Production workflow from idea conception through to final delivery

·        Effective crewing and resource management

·        Legal and regulatory frameworks, as well as production risk assessment

·        Budget management and financial planning

·        Soft skills, including conflict resolution and communicating complex plans to a variety of clients and crews.

Several industry partners, including Fremantle UK and All3Media, are endorsing and supporting the course and all students have the chance to participate in a work placement with an industry partner during the training programme.

Victoria Roye, Head of Talent, Fremantle UK says:

“The production skills shortage has been widely reported and BFBS listened to the industry needs, setting about training military veterans with the tools to become production staff.

“It’s been a hugely successful and a fantastic pairing when you look at the transferable skills. The placements have been met with universal appreciation and we’re thrilled to have been able to offer work beyond the placements across a variety of our productions. We look forward to welcoming the latest intake back in February with the hope of offering more jobs in the Spring.”

Ben Cook a current participant on the 2022 course states:

“I’m learning a lot about the technical aspects of media and how to pull a big production together in lots of different places. So, whether that’s a studio or whether that’s outside it’s incredibly varied. So, we’re learning a lot.”

Ed Owen who is also on the 2022 course says:

This course is fantastic, we are now in week ten, we’re approaching halfway. We’ve completed modules on documentary filmmaking, multi-cam in the studio and we’re currently working on scripted drama. And we’ve all, I think, learnt a huge amount about the world of media.”

The Production Managers Course will run from June 2023 until January 2024 at the BFBS Academy Headquarters in Chalfont Grove, Buckinghamshire SL9 8TN.

The Production Managers Course builds on the success of a previous course run by BFBS Academy for service leavers, which led to an HNC qualification in Creative Media Production. 86% of those who completed the course now have successful careers in media production.
