Plan to improve Forces families’ awareness of Armed Forces Covenant

A two-year programme is being launched to raise awareness of the Armed Forces Covenant and help Service personnel, their families and the bereaved discover how new measures in the Armed Forces Bill can benefit them.

AFF has been given a £370,000 grant to work with the Naval and RAF Families Federations on significantly increasing knowledge of the Covenant among Forces families.

The Covenant Awareness Programme will offer them improved access to resources and support networks.

It will also inform them about positive effects of the Armed Forces Covenant Legal Duty Extension, included in the Bill going through Parliament.

All Government departments, devolved nations, local councils and other organisations will have to consider the needs of military personnel, families and veterans when making policy decisions in areas including housing, healthcare and benefits.

AFF Head of Policy Rachel Smith said:

“As a Families Federation, we have frequent enquiries about accessing the Armed Forces Covenant from serving personnel and families, the bereaved, organisations that support them and Government departments.

“People tell us that the information they receive is often confusing and complex, and they need our expertise to be able to access the support and guidance they need.

“AFF very much welcomes the award of this grant, as it will enable the creation of tailored resources and support, which we hope will enable a greater understanding of the Covenant and what it can do for the Armed Forces community.”

The Covenant Awareness Programme is funded by the Ministry of Defence Armed Forces Families Fund, administered by the Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust.

Created in 2011, the Armed Forces Covenant is a national promise that those who serve, have served, and their families, including the bereaved, should not suffer disadvantage due to their Service.
