Job description

The Royal British Legion seeks an experienced advocate to represent injured Armed Service Personnel in hearings of appeals for compensation for injuries attributable to Service. This includes giving advice and assistance with the initial claim through to representing the claimant before a statutory tribunal where findings or awards are disputed.

You should have experience of presenting a case to a panel gained by working in an advocacy capacity within the voluntary sector, public service, first tier tribunals or Armed services. You will have excellent communication skills and be able to construct and deliver a case on behalf of the appellant. You will have demonstrable experience of reading, interpreting and applying relevant legislation.

You will be required to review all papers relating to appeals, interview individual appellants, advise on the merits of the appeal and present the case in a clear professional manner before the Tribunal.

Training for the role will be completed internally via role shadowing, observation of War Pension representatives at tribunal/War Pension advice clinics and reading of and familiarisation with, the applicable legislation.

Knowledge of the military structure and empathy with the Armed Forces, together with knowledge of medical terminology, medical conditions and their effects, is desirable.

The appointment involves working from home, but with travel to tribunals, (which may require some overnight stays), Royal British Legion Area Offices and outreach locations throughout the Midlands. The suitable candidate should be commutable throughout the Midlands; especially Derby, Lincoln and Norwich. Whilst training, travel may be required to the North/South regions.

A full driving licence and access to a car is essential.

This role is fixed-terms for 6 months
