SSAFA – Director of Volunteer Operations

A fantastic opportunity has arisen for a full time Director of Volunteer Operations in the Volunteer Support department at SSAFA, the UK’s oldest national tri-service military charity.

About the role

We are seeking a senior executive with effective management skills and experience of developing strategy, gained from the commercial, public or voluntary sector as well as an understanding of, and empathy with, the volunteer ethos.  The post-holder will need to be able to work independently, as well as in conjunction with staff and volunteers to lead on all issues surrounding the volunteer network. This post is a member of the SSAFA Management Board and will be required to travel across the UK and overseas throughout the year.

The volunteer network is complex, with some 92 branches and 68 in-service committees both in the United Kingdom and overseas.  Volunteers operate in different environments (amongst the serving community, veterans in communities and overseas) and require a bespoke approach to the support they need.

Requirements

To carry out this role successfully you will have:

  • Strong interpersonal and networking skills.
  • Experience of providing information and reports to senior management.
  • Effective leadership and delegation skills.
  • Experience of strategic management in commercial, public or voluntary sector.
  • Knowledge and experience of overseeing projects.
