SSAFA marks King’s Coronation and VE Day in Glasgow

The Glasgow & Renfrewshire Branch of SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity sponsored The King’s Coronation and Victory in Europe parade at the Veterans Monument in Knightswood, Glasgow on 6 May 2023.

The man behind the event, former Para and now SSAFA Glasgow & Renfrewshire branch fundraiser Terry McCourt, said:

Not only the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the coronation of King Charles III, but also the chance to commemorate the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice during World War Two.

Maybe it was the coronation spirit and goodwill that helped, but it was one of the best VE Day services and parades in the 11 years we’ve been having them.

This was all due to the support from Glasgow & West of Scotland Branch The Parachute Regimental Association Branch President Colonel Bob Steele and his lovely wife Dr Joyce Steele, and Chairman Martin O’Hear, not forgetting Charles Scott, the Chairman of SSAFA Glasgow & Renfrewshire, the branch’s standard bearer Alan Steele, and David Black, one of SSAFA’s key players in Scotland and the man who did so much background work to help us achieve our aims.”

Terry also thanked all the veterans, and family members and friends, as well as standard bearers on parade and Padre George Hunter for conducting the service. He also paid tribute to the Balaklava Pipes and Drums and Coalburn Brass Family Band.

He ended:

Last but not least Vicky, Andy, and Morven of The Haven at Vanguard Horses Helping Heroes with their ponies Rosie, Rainbow, and Ginger.”
