Army veteran Maurillia Simpson is celebrating a new-found sense of freedom and independence after receiving a specially adapted handcycle with funding secured by SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity – with some extra support from Haig Housing to help her get out and enjoy it.
Maurillia, who lives in a Haig Housing Trust home, received the handcycle this week following an award from SSAFA and the Veterans Mobility Fund. The specialist equipment will enable her to get out independently, exercise and enjoy cycling in a way adapted to her needs.
To complement SSAFA’s award, Haig Housing’s charitable arm, the ‘Mrs Willie James’ Fund has provided Maurillia with a cover, specialist matting, bike rack, helmet and gloves, ensuring she has the practical equipment she needs to make the most of her new handcycle.
Representatives from both organisations joined Maurillia to celebrate its arrival, including SSAFA London South West Chair Rod Croucher, marking a very special moment for Maurillia and the organisations that have supported her.
London South West Branch Chair, Rod Croucher CBE said:
“Seeing Maurillia with her new handcycle is a wonderful reminder of the difference the right support can make. SSAFA is here to provide practical, financial and emotional support to members of the Armed Forces community when they need us, and we were delighted to be able to fund this specialist equipment for Maurillia.
We’re also extremely grateful to Haig Housing for providing the additional equipment that will help her get the very best from it. This is a lovely example of organisations within the Armed Forces community working alongside one another to make a real and lasting difference.”
Maurillia Simpson said:
“This handcycle will open up a whole new world for me. It will give me greater independence and the opportunity to stay active, get outdoors and enjoy activities that would otherwise be difficult. I’m incredibly grateful to SSAFA and Haig Housing for their support and kindness in making this happen.”
Alex Reeve, Deputy Chief Executive, from Haig Housing, said:
“We are delighted to support Maurillia with SSAFA by providing accessories for her new handcycle. Working in partnership with SSAFA and other veterans’ organisations enables us to make a real difference to the lives of veterans and their families, and we are pleased to have played a part in helping Maurillia enjoy the independence and opportunities that her new handcycle will bring. This celebration highlights the support available across the Armed Forces community and the difference that can be made when organisations work together to meet the individual needs of veterans.”
