The Women’s Royal Naval Service Benevolent Trust (WRNS BT) recently joined residents, families, veterans and the local community in Beccles to celebrate an extraordinary milestone – a combined 302 years of life from three remarkable Second World War veterans.
WRNS BT Vice Chair Kath Hutton attended a special event at a local care home honouring former Leading Wrens Laurel MacDonald and Rose McCandless, alongside former Land Girl Angela Ottaway. Laurel and Rose both served as Leading Wren Cooks during the Second World War, working in camps connected to HMS Pembroke.
The celebration brought together family, friends and members of the local veteran community, including standard bearers from the Royal Naval Association and Royal British Legion Beccles branches. Residents and guests were also treated to a performance by singing duo The Vibettes, helping create a memorable afternoon of music and reflection.
On behalf of WRNS BT Chair Heather Rimmer, a congratulatory card was sent to the three women, while Kath Hutton presented them with flowers in recognition of their service and remarkable lives.
Kath Hutton, Vice Chair of WRNS BT, said:
“It was a real privilege to join Laurel, Rose and Angela, alongside their families and friends, to celebrate such an incredible milestone. Between them they represent not only 302 years of life, but also an extraordinary legacy of service, resilience and dedication during the Second World War. It was wonderful to see the local community come together to honour them in such a warm and joyful way.”
