Mental Health Awareness Week 2025: Supporting Veterans in Emergency Care

Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust has launched a new initiative to support veterans and Armed Forces personnel during Emergency Department visits.

Inspired by feedback from a veteran patient, the Trust created “Veterans ED Care Packs” containing calming tools such as stress balls, earplugs, and support leaflets. The goal is to reduce distress and improve the care experience for those affected by Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and other similar conditions.

In addition to the care packs, staff now receive specialised training to better identify and assist Armed Forces patients, including adding alerts to medical records and understanding military-specific communication styles. The Trust’s NHS Veteran Aware accreditation highlights its commitment to respectful, informed care for the Armed Forces community.

This thoughtful and collaborative approach ensures emergency services are more responsive, inclusive, and attuned to the unique experiences of veterans.

The initiative is our latest feature in our Salute! section where we put a spotlight on the extraordinary journeys of care, service, and family within the Armed Forces community.
