Simon Marlow, who joined BFBS as a freelance presenter and then permanently as a staff member from 2007, died in hospital in London on Friday 27 June.
A proud Liverpudlian, Simon’s radio career began in 1986, and he went on to become a well-established presenter in UK commercial radio at stations such as Radio City in Liverpool, 2-TEN in Reading, Chiltern Radio in Dunstable, and Classic FM in London.
Ben Chapman, BFBS CEO, said:
“Simon was always a bright force of nature in any setting, understanding the power of good relationships, making entertaining content every day whilst always going the extra mile to improve the lives of the audience he served, especially when he was living in military communities.
“And wherever Simon was, whoever he was with, there was always laughter. He made a difference.”
Simon brought creativity to BFBS as both a producer and presenter. His love of music, audio experience and broad skills meant it wasn’t long before station manager appointments followed and he spent time in Afghanistan, Cyprus, Brunei, Germany, the Falklands, and most recently in Northern Ireland with BFBS.
But it was a posting to Gibraltar where he found home, and where many of his initiatives remain to this day. From the Rock, he steered the station through the trials of the pandemic, ultimately falling in love with the area and making solid plans to spend his retirement in nearby Spain.
Ben Chapman continued:
“We send our heartfelt condolences to Simon’s family and friends at such a sad time and to his team in Northern Ireland, his many listeners, and colleagues across the BFBS world who have known and worked closely with Simon.
“He will be held in the hearts of all at BFBS at such a tragic time. He’s gone much too soon.”
