A father and son with a proud three-generation history in the Royal Marines are participating in Race Across the UK this September.
Mick (70), a retired carpenter and joiner, and his son Jack (36), a Charge Nurse in the NHS, have teamed up to participate in Race Across the UK in support of Royal Navy & Royal Marines Charity, which is deeply personal to them.
Race Across the UK will see Jack and Mick embarking on a once-in-a-lifetime adventure, travelling from Edinburgh to Dartmouth without map apps, cars or planes – relying solely on their wits, a map, and what they can carry – all to raise vital funds in support of Naval families.
“Our family’s ties to the Royal Marines run deep,” says Mick. “Jack’s great-grandfather served with distinction in the First World War, his grandfather fought in the Second World War, and my other son served in Iraq and Afghanistan. Supporting RNRMC feels like giving back to an organisation that has supported families like ours for generations.”
RNRMC is the principal charity of the Royal Navy, supporting serving and former personnel and their families. Jack’s brother received vital assistance from SSAFA when he was medically discharged from the Royal Marines in 2012, a testament to the life-changing impact of the charity’s work.
When asked what drew them to Race Across the UK, the pair said:
“We love the idea of the unknown. The spontaneity of having to make our way across the country without knowing exactly where we’re going, it’s a challenge we can’t wait to tackle together.”
Their message to others considering the challenge is simple:
“Don’t hesitate – sign up today! The work RNRMC does is invaluable. If you’ve got a sense of adventure, this is a brilliant and fun way to raise vital funds for an incredible charity.”
