Blesma and Ukrainian Veterans unite for football at Sandhurst

Two Blesma Members teamed up with limbless Ukrainian veterans for a football tournament at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst to promote resilience and international camaraderie.

Lisa Johnston and Nick Grey were at the heart of the action as their combined team took on opponents from Arsenal, Brighton & Hove Albion, and RMA Sandhurst in the event, which was organised by Tackling Matters, a charity that builds pitches for injured, amputee and PTSD-affected soldiers and civilians.

“It was great fun and an honour to play with the Ukrainian veterans who were guests at Sandhurst,” said Lisa, a former combat medical technician who is also a Blesma Trustee. “It was humbling as we learned some of them had been captured and tortured by the Russians.

“We shared the same sense of humour so it made for a great occasion, and there is a hope that it can become an annual tournament. We played on a special pitch that was rolled up at the end of the day and taken to Ukraine, creating more opportunities for amputee sport.”
