102-Year-Old WWII Veteran Takes to the Skies Above Cambridge in Special Glider Flight

On Saturday 13 December, 102-year-old Second World War veteran Robbie Hall, who served with Bomber Command, realised one of her long-held dreams as she enjoyed a breathtaking glider flight above Cambridge.

The unforgettable experience was made possible by the Cambridge Gliding Centre, whom the Taxi Charity for Military Veterans first met at North Weald Airfield on Remembrance Sunday. During that meeting, Robbie shared her love of adventure and explained that while the Taxi Charity had treated her to a Spitfire flight last year, she would love to fly again — this time in a glider.

The Cambridge Gliding Centre immediately offered to make that wish come true, generously providing Robbie with a complimentary flight. With perfect weather conditions on the day, Robbie was able to enjoy breathtaking views and a peaceful journey through the skies – she even took over the controls.

Robbie was accompanied to the airfield by Taxi Charity ambassador Kaye Gladden Thorpe and her husband Al, ensuring she was supported throughout the day.

Kaye Gladden Thorpe said:

“Seeing Robbie take to the skies at the age of 102 was incredibly emotional. She has such a love of life and adventure, and this experience meant the world to her. We are hugely grateful to the Cambridge Gliding Centre for their kindness and generosity in making this special day possible.”

David Guest from the Cambridge Gliding Centre said:

“The Club saw it as an absolute privilege to welcome Robbie to our airfield and give her the opportunity to fly with us. Her story, her spirit and her service are truly inspiring, and we were honoured to play our part in creating such a memorable experience for her.”

Colin Mills Chairman of the Taxi Charity for Military Veterans said:

“The Taxi Charity for Military Veterans would like to extend its heartfelt thanks to the Cambridge Gliding Centre for their generosity, warmth and support, and for helping to create another unforgettable memory for Robbie.”

To fund and facilitate their work, the charity is wholly reliant on donations, grants and sponsorship: www.taxicharity.org
