SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity is proud to announce the launch of its Brighter Future campaign, tackling isolation and improving the well-being of serving personnel, veterans and their families.
This year’s campaign is focused on providing life-changing support to those battling loneliness and struggling to find a sense of community, especially those who feel disconnected from others.
SSAFA is sharing the story of Tracy Geduld (56), who due to a devasting series of events found herself seriously ill, without the means to support herself. Deteriorating mental health meant she developed agoraphobia and didn’t leave the house for nine months.
Thanks to the support of SSAFA and Jim Godfrey, a casework volunteer Tracy was able to access the emotional and financial support she needed to get back on her feet.
“I’d been struggling for years”, begins Tracy “but SSAFA picked me up and Jim was so kind. Just being able to buy a new dressing gown and warm clothes, made it possible to put food on the table, turn the heating on and look in the mirror again. SSAFA turned my life around.”
Tracy says Jim’s belief in her was transformative. He reminded her that SSAFA and the military community were her family.
“SSAFA and the military community were there for me. They are my family, and now I know they are.” Tracy adds.
Jim said:
“Tracy was incredibly brave to come forward, so many of our armed forces community struggle on, and yet we are here to help. We can do so much to help so many. We are waiting for your call. Don’t wait until crisis point, give us a call, come and have a coffee and be part of our community.”
Today, Tracy is a regular at SSAFA veterans’ breakfasts, surrounded by new friends and a support system that brings her hope for the future. She is no longer isolated but part of a community that cares.
SSAFA’s Spring Campaign is designed to ensure that more veterans like Tracy receive the care they need to overcome isolation. Whether through practical support, emotional guidance, or simply being there when they need someone to talk to, SSAFA is dedicated to helping every veteran feel part of a larger family.
GIVE THE GIFT OF A NEW BEGINNING
This Spring, you can help make a real difference in the lives of our Armed Forces community. Your donation will help SSAFA provide vital support where it’s needed most. Here’s how you can make an impact:
- £8 could answer a call on our helpline, Forcesline, supporting those in desperate need.
- £30 could provide clothing, helping our veterans stay warm and dignified.
- £50 could help pay for a utility bill, ensuring our Armed Forces have light and heat in their darkest hour.
- £100 could go towards providing essential white goods, helping veterans keep their food stored and cooked safely, giving them the chance to step into a brighter future.
Tracy’s story is a powerful reminder that isolation isn’t just about being physically alone but feeling disconnected and forgotten. This campaign is in place to show veterans that they are not alone, that SSAFA are here to walk beside them every step of the way.
The Spring Campaign is a call to action to the public to get involved, donate, or volunteer to help combat the isolation many veterans experience. The funds raised will go towards supporting outreach programs, providing essential grants, and ensuring veterans have access to the services they deserve.
