The Defence Medical Welfare Service (DMWS) is continuing to provide vital support to serving personnel, veterans and families across the Royal Navy community, thanks to recent funding from the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity (RNRMC).
When a family member faces illness, injury or a significant health diagnosis, the challenges often extend far beyond the medical condition itself. Navigating healthcare systems, attending appointments, managing practical responsibilities and coping with emotional pressures can quickly become overwhelming. DMWS works alongside individuals and families to provide personalised welfare support, helping them access services, overcome barriers and feel supported throughout difficult periods.
Recent funding from RNRMC will help sustain and strengthen this important work, ensuring more members of the naval community can access the practical and emotional support they need when facing health-related challenges.
One beneficiary family experienced the impact of DMWS firsthand when their daughter required urgent medical support.
“DMWS support made a genuinely significant difference at what was a worrying and time-sensitive point for us.What stood out most was the way the DMWS Welfare Officer also considered our daughter’s autism, ensuring the NHS team factored in the right adjustments so the experience would be as low-stress as possible. That combination of practical action and personal awareness is exactly what we needed. Her involvement directly enabled us to get the scan in time for the follow-up appointment and gave us reassurance that our daughter was being properly supported throughout. We’re genuinely very grateful for her help.” – DMWS beneficiary
Stories like this demonstrate the value of having someone who can provide practical support, advocate when needed and help families navigate what can often feel like overwhelming circumstances.
A spokesperson for DMWS said:
“Defence Medical Welfare Service (DMWS) are proud to deliver life-changing professional physical, mental health and specialist wellbeing support for Royal Navy and Royal Marines serving personnel, reservists, veterans and their families across the UK. We deliver confidential and individualised physical and mental health and wellbeing support, helping beneficiaries navigate healthcare pathways back home and into their communities. We also help families maintain positive relationships by reducing stress, improving communication and ensuring they feel supported throughout difficult periods.”
Through its partnership with DMWS, RNRMC is helping ensure that members of the Royal Navy family have access to expert welfare support at some of the most challenging times in their lives. By providing practical guidance, advocacy and emotional reassurance, DMWS helps individuals and families focus on what matters most: their health, wellbeing and recovery.
