Trafalgar Night remains one of the most significant occasions in the Royal Navy calendar, bringing together sailors, Royal Marines and personnel from across the Naval Service to celebrate naval heritage, tradition and service. Building on the success of previous years, this year the all-ranks Trafalgar Night celebration was held at the Princess Royal Gallery in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.
The event provides a unique opportunity to recognise and reward members of the Naval Service for their commitment, professionalism and contribution. Through a selection process, sailors and Royal Marines from across the Service will be invited to attend, joining fellow personnel for an evening that celebrates both individual achievement and the enduring values of the Royal Navy.
Set against the backdrop of one of the Royal Navy’s most iconic ships, the evening will combine longstanding Trafalgar Night traditions with an opportunity for personnel of all ranks to come together in a spirit of camaraderie, reflection and pride. Guests enjoyed musical performances from the Royal Marines Band Service, including a Corps of Drums and string quartet, adding to the ceremonial atmosphere of the occasion.
The evening also featured guest speeches from Coronation Street actor Anthony Cotton MBE and Olympic gold medallist and world rowing champion Dr Imogen Grant MBE, who shared their experiences and reflections on resilience, dedication and achievement. Commodore Purdy attended as the Royal Navy’s Senior Host, helping to welcome personnel from across the Service to the celebration.
“Royal Navy & Royal Marines Charity’s support has been instrumental in enabling this year’s Second Sea Lord’s All Ranks Trafalgar Night. Their generosity helps bring together sailors from across the Naval Service to celebrate our heritage, recognise outstanding achievement, and thank the people who deliver operational success every day. It is a fitting opportunity to acknowledge the remarkable dedication, professionalism, and contribution of our sailors, and we are extremely grateful to RNRMC for helping make the event possible.” – Lt Stevens RN, 2SL MA2
As with Trafalgar Night celebrations held across the Royal Navy, the event honours the legacy of Admiral Lord Nelson while recognising the people who continue to serve today. It serves as a reminder of the shared experiences, values and sense of belonging that unite the Naval family.
“To be selected to attend was a real honour. Experiencing the traditions of Trafalgar Night alongside colleagues from across the Naval Service made it a memorable occasion.” – Trafalgar Night attendee
The event is supported through funding from the Royal Navy & Royal Marines Charity (RNRMC), helping to recognise the dedication of serving personnel and strengthen connections across the Naval community.
