The Armed Forces Christian Union (AFCU) will mark its 175th anniversary with a special celebration event on Saturday 6 June 2026 at St Paul’s Church, Camberley. Titled “AFCU at 175: A Celebration of God’s Goodness”, the event welcomes people of all ages and stages.
Founded in 1851, the AFCU exists to enable, equip and encourage Christian members of the Armed Forces through discipleship, fellowship, and prayer. What began as a small prayer and Bible study group led by a young officer has grown into a unified organisation serving Christian personnel across the Army, Royal Navy and Royal Air Force, both in the UK and overseas.
Throughout the 19th century, informal gatherings for prayer and fellowship took place on garrisons, ships and at annual meetings in London. These early groups laid the foundations for a more structured movement. During the challenges of the 20th century—including two World Wars—Christian service personnel continued to find strength and hope through shared faith, often forming fellowships wherever they were deployed.
A major milestone came in 2005 with the formal establishment of the Armed Forces Christian Union, bringing together previously independent Christian groups into a single organisation. Today, the AFCU continues to adapt, embracing digital tools such as online Bible studies and virtual gatherings to support service personnel and their families wherever they are stationed.
Reflecting on the anniversary, AFCU’s Operations and Communications Director, Rebecca Benfield, said:
“This is a remarkable milestone, and we want to celebrate it together as one AFCU family.
“Our theme for the day comes from Psalm 145, reminding us of God’s unchanging goodness across generations. That’s exactly what we’ll be celebrating. The AFCU stands firmly on the shoulders of those who came before.”
The anniversary celebration will include a service of thanksgiving, updates from AFCU ministries, children’s activities, and a celebratory ceilidh to close the day.
