BFBS Trustee Presented with MBE by King

A long-standing trustee for military charity and media organisation BFBS has received an MBE.

Howard Perlin was recognised in the late Queen’s last Birthday Honours for services to broadcasting.

Mr Perlin, 76, received his gong from the King at Windsor Castle on Tuesday.

BFBS delivers entertainment, news and information via TV, radio and digital channels to service personnel in far-flung places all over the world.

In his nearly 30 years on the board of trustees, Mr Perlin has seen BFBS staff help keep up morale in theatres such as Iraq and Afghanistan and bring connectivity to those in hard-to-reach postings, like Gurkhas serving in Nepal.

“When I first joined BFBS, we sent a lot of live entertainment shows around the world,” he said. “Now, in addition, we have the ability to reach ships at sea with live sport.”

Mr Perlin was recognised in the late Queen’s last Birthday Honours for services to broadcasting.

BFBS, which is the parent company of Forces News, uses a complex network of satellite technology to enable serving personnel to watch the same programmes their families can see at home.

Radio teams, reporters and engineers live and work alongside servicemen and women on bases in locations such as the Falkland Islands and Cyprus.

Mr Perlin, an accountant and Vice Chairman of the board, said:

“I am honoured and delighted to receive this award.

“It has been a privilege to be a trustee of BFBS and to have observed at close hand the wonderful work BFBS does for our service communities.

“This award is also a testament to the high esteem in which BFBS is held.”
