Caribbean War Graves – Untold Stories

On Parade travelled with The British West India Regiment Heritage Trust to The Commonwealth War Graves Commission site in Étaples, France.

Two lanterns got lit to commemorate The ‘Windrush Generation’ and Mary Seacole. The ‘Windrush Generation’ – HMT Empire Windrush arrived at the Port of Tilbury on 21 June 1948.

The ship carried 492 Caribbean migrants, many veterans of the Second World War. Mary Jane Seacole – Mary was born on 23 November 1805 – 14 May 1881 and was a British-Jamaican nurse during the Crimean War. Mary became popular among service personnel, who raised money for her when she faced poverty after the war.

In 1857 a four-day fundraising gala took place in London to honour Seacole. About 40,000 attended, including veterans.
