Golfers tee up festive cash boost for Veteran Care Village

A Christmas fayre has helped golfers tee up a £3,000 cash boost for Broughton House Veteran Care Village in Salford.

Prestwich Golf Club has raised money for the care home with a series of events since club captain Paul Walsh chose it as his charity of the year when he took up the post in April.

Funds raised from the club’s latest golf event, its annual Christmas Fayre, mean it has now hit £3,000.

The Christmas Fayre used to be known as the Turkey Trot, as prizes of fresh turkeys were supplied to the winning team by former club member and local butcher Rodney Nutter, the late father of celebrity chef Andrew Nutter.

At this year’s fayre, held on Saturday, December 16, the winners’ prizes included festive spirits and champagne – with Christmas puddings for the losing team.

The winning team comprised Mike Thorpe, Alan Berry, Ron Dawson and Gary Stephenson. More than 80 people later tucked in to the club’s annual Christmas dinner.

Club captain Paul, a financial adviser who lives in Bury, said Broughton House was an important charity whose veterans deserved the support of the local community.

He added:

“The continued generosity of Prestwich Golf Club members is overwhelming. We will stay closely supportive of Broughton House, the captain’s charity, until the end of my tenure in April 2024, and we will be looking to make further contribution.

“I will continue to be a friend of Broughton House thereafter, having seen first-hand the difference that it makes to the lives of the veterans.”

As well as fundraising golf days and events, the club has generated financial support for Broughton House by imposing a small ‘fine’ on players whose balls end up in the bunker at the 18th hole.

Jack Stephenson, marketing coordinator at Broughton House, said:

“We are truly appreciative of the dedication shown by everyone at Prestwich Golf Club for rallying behind our veterans since Paul’s captaincy began in April.

“The Christmas Fayre is yet another brilliant example of the hard work that Paul and the members have been putting in to raise vital funding, highlighting their commitment to making a meaningful difference to the lives of our veterans.”
