HMS Dragon Returns Home to Portsmouth

Royal Navy & Royal Marines Charity was proud to stand alongside families, friends and loved ones at His Majesty’s Naval Base Portsmouth as they eagerly awaited the homecoming of HMS Dragon, after her nine-month deployment.

As the Type 45 destroyer made her way into the harbour, the excitement was palpable. Along the seafront and on the jetty, families scanned the horizon for their first glimpse of the ship carrying home those they had missed for so many months. For many, it marked the end of a period defined by separation, resilience and anticipation.

The Ship’s Company received a warm and heartfelt welcome from loved ones, supporters and representatives from RNRMC, who were there to share in the emotional homecoming – which served as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by both serving personnel and the families who support them from home.

Throughout the deployment, HMS Dragon played a vital role in supporting UK operations in Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean. Equipped with her Sea Viper missile system, the destroyer provides advanced air defence capabilities designed to counter aircraft, missiles and drones.

During her time away, HMS Dragon contributed to maritime security operations and undertook extensive weapons and sensor testing at a NATO facility. The ship also operated alongside the French carrier strike group, using her sophisticated surveillance and air defence capabilities to detect potential threats and provide early warning protection to the wider task group.

While homecomings are moments of celebration, they also highlight the commitment and sacrifice that military life demands. Behind every deployment are families navigating months apart, missed birthdays and anniversaries, important milestones and the everyday challenges that come with having a loved one serving far from home.

RNRMC remains committed to providing practical assistance, emotional support and a strong network of care for serving personnel and their families whilst they are deployed. Whether during deployment, at homecoming, or through life’s wider challenges, the charity is there to ensure that no member of the Royal Navy family faces those challenges alone.
