Launch of the Service Children’s Progression Alliance’s mission

Launch of new national partnership of organisations focussed on improving outcomes for children from military families. The Service Children’s Progression (SCiP) Alliance’s mission is to champion the progression of the children of military personnel so that they can make informed and confident transitions through further and higher education into thriving adult lives and careers. Conference delegates from service charities, local authorities, schools, colleges, universities and policy makers discussed the key messages that:

  • Service children’s educational progression is affected by deployment and mobility
  • The Office For Fair Access states that service children should be viewed by HE providers as a group in need of support to reach their potential through HE participation, yet only 5 universities mention service children in their access agreements
  • Schools and universities would like clear guidance informed by research detailing practice which works; the SCiP Alliance has a role to play in encouraging and coordinating activity and bringing networks together
  • Systems and guidance exists, it just needs to be used consistently. There is an awareness raising job to do
