RAF Families Federation shares report on the lived experience of single RAF personnel

The RAF Families Federation (RAF FF) has shared a report examining the lived experience of single individuals serving in the Royal Air Force.

Report on the lived experience of single RAF personnel < RAF Families Federation

The report brings together evidence and testimony from RAF personnel and explores themes of inequity and disparity, particularly in relation to single living accommodation and how it compares with Service Family Accommodation. It also highlights the cumulative impact these experiences can have on morale, wellbeing and retention.

The report has already been shared with senior RAF leadership to ensure early sight and senior awareness. Defence Housing Services have also had sight of the findings, reflecting the relevance of accommodation policy and delivery to the issues raised.

As an independent organisation, the RAF Families Federation exists to listen to RAF personnel and families and to raise evidence-based issues where lived experience suggests there may be a gap between policy intent and reality. While RAFFF works closely and constructively with the RAF and MOD, its independence allows it to reflect candidly what people are experiencing on the ground.

Andrea Devlin MBE, RAF Families Federation Director, said:

“Single personnel make up a significant proportion of the RAF, yet their experiences are often less visible in conversations about welfare and support. This report is not about blame or criticism. It is about listening carefully to what people have told us and ensuring those experiences are properly understood. We shared this report first with senior leaders because it is serious, evidence-based work that deserved responsible handling. Wider distribution is an important part of encouraging informed discussion and supporting improvement for RAF people.”

The RAF Families Federation will continue to engage constructively with the RAF, MOD, charities and other stakeholders on the themes raised in the report, with the aim of improving fairness, dignity and lived experience for single personnel.
