Kerry Clark and Fiona Grist, two retired Queen Alexandra’s Royal Army Nursing Corps (QARANC) Majors and friends of more than 25 years, came together over the New Year to set themselves a meaningful challenge for 2026.
Driven by a desire to honour the memory of dear friends who are sadly no longer with them, the duo – competing as Two Grit One Goal from Dollar and Cromarty in Scotland – will take on Race Across the UK this October. More than an adventure, this is a deeply personal challenge, shaped by the loss of close friends and a shared determination to turn grief into something positive and purposeful – an inspiration that sits at the heart of their fundraising efforts.
They said:
“Our lovely friend, Commander Amy Gilmore MBE, sadly passed away last year after a brave and extensive battle with cancer. Right up until the end she raised money for Navy charities and to help the welfare of those around her.
“Another friend, John Connell, a former member of the Household Cavalry, lost his battle with cancer in November 2025 after being diagnosed with a glioblastoma brain tumour earlier that year. He was passionate about his time in the military and would have loved that we’re doing this”.
For the pair, Royal Navy & Royal Marines Charity (RNRMC) is close to their hearts, with the race offering the perfect blend of adventure, endurance and fundraising. Kerry has previously completed a similar challenge with her family in South East Asia, making this a natural next step in support of a cause that means so much to them both. Fiona, meanwhile, has taken on numerous fundraising challenges for cancer and hospice charities over the years.
Kerry said:
“With so many close friends in the Armed Forces, my husband serving in the Royal Navy and both our boys aspiring to join the naval service, supporting RNRMC is not only a way of giving back, but also an investment in the future welfare of those who serve. Both myself and Fi, whose husband is also Ex Army, feel very passionately about supporting those serving and veterans alike.”
Along the route from Dartmouth to Inverness, competitors will uncover mystery checkpoints, crack clues, and face challenges that test their nerve, creativity, and quick thinking. Armed with just a £500 budget and combined ingenuity, teams will hustle through towns and cities, call in favours and charm the locals along the way!
From unexpected challenges to the shared experiences, the team is relishing the opportunity to have fun, make memories and take on an unforgettable adventure together.
Fundraising is already well under way, with social media playing a key role in spreading the word. Plans are also in place for quiz nights and a horse racing event to boost donations and bring supporters together.
When it comes to encouraging others to take part, their message is clear:
“Just do it. Come along and join the challenge – it will be loads of fun and all for a great cause. RNRMC provides truly valued assistance to those that need it at a time that counts. To be able to give back and help protect those that may be suffering is an incredible honour.”
