Six-year-old pens loving letter to Granny at Royal Star & Garter ahead of Grandparents’ Day

A six-year-old has written a tribute to her grandmother at Royal Star & Garter ahead of Grandparents’ Day.

Young Winnie penned the moving letter to Lila before the special day on Sunday 3 October.

The day celebrates the contribution grandparents make to society and the lives of their families.

Grandmother-of-three Lila has been a resident at Royal Star & Garter for nearly three years, following a stroke. The charity provides loving, compassionate care to veterans and their partners living with disability or dementia. Lila loves taking part in art activities and often sends her paintings to her family.

In her letter, Winnie wrote:

“My Granny is special because she is nice. She is kind and cares for me so much. I love all the pictures Granny paints for me. I love you Granny.”

Lila’s son Michael, who is Winnie’s dad, describes her as a wonderful grandmother, saying:

“Since her stroke her speech and movement have been significantly affected, but this hasn’t stopped her from sharing her love and affection with her family. She is always smiling when she is with her grandchildren. She loves them so much and cherishes every moment shared together.”

Prior to the pandemic, grandchildren and great grandchildren would regularly visit their loved ones at Royal Star & Garter. School visits were also popular, with children as young as a few months old up to secondary school age coming in to meet residents.
