Retired QARANC Majors Race Across the UK in Honour of Dear Friends

Kerry Clark and Fiona Grist, two retired Queen Alexandra’s Royal Army Nursing Corps (QARANC) Majors and friends of more than 25 years, are taking part in Royal Navy & Royal Marines Charity’s Race Across the UK Challenge.

After setting off from Dartmouth on Tuesday 6 October 2026, the pair, from Dollar and Cromarty in Scotland, are making their way to Inverness, uncovering mystery checkpoints, cracking clues, and tackling challenges that test their nerve, creativity, and quick thinking.

More than an adventure, this is a deeply personal challenge, shaped by the loss of close friends and a shared determination to turn grief into something positive and purposeful. That inspiration sits at the heart of their fundraising efforts.

The team is taking on the challenge in memory of two close friends. Commander Amy Gilmore MBE sadly passed away last year following a brave and extensive battle with cancer. Even in her final months, she continued to raise funds for naval charities and support the welfare of those around her.

They are also honouring John Connell, a former member of the Household Cavalry, who passed away in November 2025 after being diagnosed earlier that year with a glioblastoma brain tumour. Passionate about his military service, John would have loved the fact that they are taking part in this challenge.

Travelling with Kerry and Fiona is Tortellini, their small race mascot, who carries a very special meaning.

Fiona explained:

“We’re carrying Tortellini with us in memory of our wonderful friend Amy, one of the two very special people inspiring Kerry and me on this adventure. She left us with #bemoreamy, a sentiment that John, who we are also remembering through this challenge, would definitely have supported.

“Amy had her own little turtle companion with her on deployment, so it feels only right that Tortellini is travelling the miles with us now.”
