Family days are an important part of the naval calendar. Not only do they boost morale on board, but they also give the families and friends of serving personnel the opportunity to come together and feel part of the wider naval community.
This was certainly the case at the recent HMS Mersey Families Day.
Due to the ship’s three-watch crewing model, two family days were held consecutively, ensuring that families from all three watches had the opportunity to take part and experience life on board.
A day at sea, cruising around the Solent, provided a memorable experience for guests of all ages. A range of charitable organisations were on hand to offer support and guidance, alongside activities including ship tours and refreshments, with sandwiches and cakes available throughout the day.
Lieutenant Commander Dan Wardle, Commanding Officer of HMS Mersey said:
“Today is a fantastic oppourtunity for us to take our loved ones, friends and family to sea and demonstrate what we do when we’re off the wall and over the horizon. We are supported by many organisations like RNRMC and Naval Families Federation, who are here to give our families and loved ones a better understanding of the support that is available”.
After returning to HMNB Portsmouth, celebrations continued with a hog roast for attendees, while an ice cream van proved to be a popular addition and was enjoyed by families and crew alike.
We were proud to support this event through a grant from RNRMC. The grants we provide help families reconnect after periods of separation, gain a better understanding of where their loved ones live and work, and, on occasion, experience life at sea alongside them.
