We are pleased to share our latest DMWS Impact Report presenting our facts & figures, service overview, insights and case studies of 2017/2018. It is a year of celebrations, as 2018 marks DMWS’s 75th anniversary. Throughout our history, we’ve always responded to the challenges and opportunities faced by those we support, which has made us what we are today: a highly responsive and professional medical welfare service.
During World War 2 we were tasked to ‘provide a service aiding the sick and wounded at home and in the field’ to improve wellbeing and deliver capability. Since 1943 we have deployed to every major conflict and have received many prestigious awards for our service. To this day our Welfare Officers play a key role in supporting patients and their families during times of physical or mental ill health. Our aim is to encourage a positive approach to treatment, improve recovery, facilitate an earlier return to work and reduce the risk of readmission.
We are now looking to further diversify our customer base with a vision to provide welfare support to former and current uniformed frontline services when they are in the patient care pathway.

The St John and Red Cross Defence Medical Welfare Service (DMWS) has been providing a person-centred medical welfare service to the Armed Forces Community since 1943. In that time we have supported over 1,000 000 patients and their families, ensuring that no one goes through the worry of injury and illness alone. Our highly trained welfare officers provide practical and emotional support to those receiving medical treatment. Recent new projects with organisations such as the police, the NHS and the probation service demonstrates the broad appeal of the organisation and its application to a wide set of frontline services.
