The charity is currently providing assistance to hundreds of bereaved Forces children and young people around the UK and services offered include guidance to parents and carers, access to professional child bereavement support, personal education and learning assistance (including grants) and fun activities such as holiday respite breaks and group events. These are all designed to remind the children and young people supported by Scotty’s that they are not alone.

Seafarers’ Advice and Information Line

Seafarers’ Advice & Information Line (SAIL) is a free advice service supporting active and former seafarers across the UK. This includes the Naval Service.
All advice is free and confidential. SAIL’s advice is given over the phone, by email or by post. SAIL also attends the VOS every month in Portsmouth.
SAIL is part of Citizens Advice.

Our team of FCA-accredited money and welfare advisers provide specialist advice and information relating to money, debt, housing, health and employment. Our veteran drop-in and hub offers peer support, training, social activities, refreshments and food parcels.
We work collaboratively with military charities, statutory bodies and other relevant organisations to increase veterans’ access to services and improve their journeys of recovery.

5 Step Recovery pathway & transition into civilian life through sport:

A. Each beneficiary will be allocated a Veteran Support Officer at time of registration. A progression pathway will be discussed and implemented. These are unique to each individual but a standard time line would be over 12 months from registration to significant outcome.

B. Initial engagement/personal contact is at an Open Day/Social Engagement event. These can comprise of a stadium tour, match day tickets, sports participation or a meeting with the SF team.

There will be opportunities and offers presented at the open day in relation to training, qualifications and pathways.

C. Training and qualifications in a variety of roles are offered as block/residential courses.

D. On completion of the training or at a defined point on the progression pathway the Veteran Support Officer (VSO) sources voluntary placements. These have primarily been professional football clubs and will continue to be so as this is the most popular interest from veterans. We have also placed veterans in a variety of roles and sports clubs including rugby, snow sports, cricket,gyms and boxing clubs.

SSAFA provides lifelong support to anyone who is currently serving or has ever served in the Royal Navy, British Army or Royal Air Force and their families.

We are part of the Battle Back programme and sports recovery. We support Help for Heroes Rolling Recovery Programme and offer additional vocational support.
Our objectives are:

a. To introduce and increase participation at the sports recovery event and to allow WIS personnel to take their first step, without committing to a full season.
b. Provide new team members for next season or give someone an exciting ride in a racing powerboat. This will increase our numbers further and promote our inclusion initiative whilst enabling transition.
c. Provide RYA courses – provided for individuals interested in Powerboats. RYA PB2, Intermediate & Advanced, Safety Boat and VHF Radio.
d. Provide opportunities for those not wishing to compete, but wish to participate in shore support, maintenance, National Race Support, scrutineering and photography.

Our aims are to develop, inspire and challenge Team Members during this demanding and difficult time transitioning from the Armed Forces, in a secure environment supported by volunteers with service backgrounds including its own WIS personnel and veterans. The project prides itself on the same values and goals to develop personal and team development post injury in the Armed Forces.

We’re constantly adapting our approach to best suit the needs of those who come to us for support. We provide the following programmes:
Sport and Recreation – We support active lifestyles and the benefits they have on health and well-being, by providing equine competitions, sporting events and recreational activity. We aim to make our equine centres affordable to all who wish to use them.
Health and Wellbeing – We provide Equine Assisted Services (EAS) to Therapy, Recovery and Rehabilitation. We aim to deliver four equine therapy courses each year to help veterans who are facing severe mental challenges. The Virtual Equestrian Centre provides a platform with pre-recorded video content, tailored to the demands of equestrianism, and is accessible to everyone online.
Learning – We provide Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) to the Neuro Diverse community by focussing on developing life skills, values and building confidence and character.
Welfare – We provide community hubs in our centres, and have a Welfare Hub and Community Café in Tidworth
Governance and Assurance – We provide our equine centres with governance and assurance to deliver a firm base from which to operate.

The Borough consists of Bolton, Horwich, Westhoughton, Farnworth, Blackrod and all the outlying villages plus anywhere else with a BL postcode who pays their council tax to Bolton Council.
Our Bolton Veterans Aid project provides support to an ever growing number of ex-serviceman and woman, and their families, resident in the Borough.

Support Offered

The Guild has been providing assistance to needy people in Bolton since 1905.
Assistance offered includes the provision of white & brown goods, school uniforms, and debt management advice via our partnership with Christians Against Poverty (CAP). Also, benefits checks via our partnership with Citizens Advice. But we will consider any reasonable requests for help and each case is judged on its merits.
The Guild also acts as a referral agency to local food banks. And, in partnership with Bolton Lions, we provide needy families with sacks of toys at Christmas
We work in partnership with SSAFA The Armed Forces Charity and, also, the Bolton Armed Forces Centre 4 Veterans in support of the military family within the Borough
